My name is Rhona Nantege. That’s it – no cool nicknames whatsoever. I was born and raised in Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, the place I call home. As a left-handed person (allegedly known as very creative), I am both a visual and performance artist and as cliché as it sounds, art is who I am. I hope to pursue a professional career in visual arts which is often downgraded in the Ugandan setting. You can only say so much in words but in an art piece? You can tell the story of the beginning to the future and back.
This painting illustrates the overwhelming nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and infodemic. Excessive news about the disease, both accurate and inaccurate, has been and is being circulated. With all the information floating around, people have a lot of information that needs to be checked for conspiracies and facts. We are being hit with waves of anger, sadness, and uncertainty, all while trying to face our new realities. The African-print places the artists setting and the carefully curated words of NEWS headlines from this year are crafted together to tell a single but varied story.
